First state to bring banking to remote areas - Odisha


  •  Odisha became the first state in the country to carry financial inclusion and extend banking services to remote rural areas through Self Help Groups (SHGs) on 27th March 2017.  

Vanita Gupta has been appointed president of 'Leadership Conference'

  •   Indian-American Vanita Gupta has been appointed as president and CEO of ‘The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights'. With this, she has also become first woman to head the prestigious organisation.


Vietnam Open International Challenger Badminton Doubles title won by Satwiksairaj & Chirag

  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India won the USD 20,000 Vietnam Open International Challenger badminton title on 27th March 2017.
  • For the young Indian pair, it was their maiden title this season, and fifth victory overall.


 Rana Kanwar Pal Singh has been elected as Speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly

  •  Rana Kanwar Pal Singh was elected as the Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly on 27th March 2017. Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh proposed his name.


Garfield Sobers Trophy awarded to - Ravichandran Ashwin

  •  Ravichandran Ashwin was awarded the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in Dharamsala on 28th March 2017. 

United Nations appointed David Beasley to Run World Food Programme

  •  The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN),Antonio Guterres,appointed former South Carolina Governor David Beasley to run the World Food Programme (WFP).
  • The WFP executive board noted Beasley’s appointment in a letter to Guterres on 28th March 2017.


Dr. B. C. Roy National Awards presented by  President Pranab Mukherjee

  •  Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India, presented Dr. B. C. Roy National Awards for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on 28th March 2017.
  • President also presented the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Awards for the years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.


General Bipin Rawat has been granted with title of Honorary General of Nepalese Army

  • The Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat was titled with the Honorary General of the Nepalese Army during his official visit to Nepal and Bangladesh from 28th March 2017 to 2nd April 2017 on 29th March 2017. This tradition began in 1969.
