Asian Wrestling Championship: India's Harpreet Singh wins bronze in  Greco-Roman weight category

  • Indian wrestler Harpreet Singh won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman weight divisions on the opening day of the Asian Wrestling Championship on 10th May 2017.
  •  In the opening match played in New Delhi, Harpreet defeated his rival Jun Ji Na of China 3-2 in 80kilogram category.

India celebrates 2017 National Technology Day on 11th May

  • The National Technology Day 2017 was observed in India and the theme of it is - Technology for inclusive and sustainable growth.

India, US exchange views on maritime developments in  Asia-Pacific & IOR

  • India and the US exchanged views on maritime developments in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region and considered steps to further strengthen bilateral maritime security cooperation in May 2017.
  •  The exchanges were made in the second round of the India-US Maritime Security Dialogue.

Ahmedabad to host a mega-event to celebrate - International Yoga Day

  • Ahmedabad city in Gujarat would be hosting the biggest ever International Yoga Day event on 21st June 2017. 
  • The same was announced by Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev while addressing a press conference in the city on 10th May 2017.
  •  The Yogi announced that the event would witness participation of over 5 lakh people.

First woman senator to breastfeed in Parliament  Larissa Waters

  • Australian Senator Larissa Waters, the deputy co-leader of the Australian Greens party became the first woman in the history of Australian Politics to breastfeed her baby during a Parliamentary session on 9th May 2017.
  •  The senator, who returned to Parliament after 10 weeks of maternity leave, breastfed her 2-months old daughter, Alia Joy, during a vote for a Greens policy motion on a federal budget.

Highest wicket taker in Womens One Day Internationals - Jhulan Goswami

  • Indian women's team fast bowler Jhulan Goswami became the highest wicket-taker in the history of Women’s One-Day Internationals on 9th May 2017.
  •  Goswami broke the decade-long record Australian Cathryn Fitzpatrick’s 180 wickets from 109 matches. 

Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year named by  N'Golo Kante

  • N’Golo Kante voted the 2017 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association in the first week of May 2017.
  •  Kante topped the poll of the 340-strong membership ahead of his Blues team-mate Eden Hazard, with Tottenham’s Dele Alli in third place.

International Day of Vesak celebrations in Colombo attended by  Narendra Modi

  • Buddha Purnima or "Vesak", the day of the Full Moon was observed globally on 10th May 2017. The day marks the birth of Gautam Buddha, who was born on the same day.
  •  It was also on this day that the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya and also it was on the day of Vesak that the Buddha passed away.

World Migratory Bird Day 2017 observed on  10th May 2017

  • The World Migratory Bird Day 2017 was observed across the world on 10th May 2017 with the theme for WMBD 2017 is "Their Future is our Future – A Healthy Planet for Migratory Birds and People.

Moon Jae-in has been sworn in as President of South Korea

  • Liberal politician Moon Jae-in was sworn in as South Korea's President in a ceremony at the National Assembly Seoul on 10th May 2017.
  • Moon won South Korea's presidential election in a victory that ends nearly a decade of its conservative rule.  

India replacing its Research station in - Antarctica

  • India is replacing its Maitri research station in Antarctica with a new one in the next three to four years. 
  • The same was announced by Madhavan Nair Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences on 9th May 2017.

Vijay Goel Flagged Off four Clean Himalaya Expeditions 


  • Vijay Goel Sports Minister flagged off four Clean Himalaya expeditions and a Medical Mountaineering expedition to Mt Satopanth (7075 Mtrs) on 9th May 2017 at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF)in Delhi.
