Sean Spicer has been resigned as Press Secretary of US White House Sean Spicer resigns as Press Secretary of US White House 

  • Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary, resigned on 22nd July 2017 from his position following the appointment of Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci as Communications Director by President Donald Trump.
  • Spicer was asked to stay on as the Press Secretary and was asked to report to Scaramucci after his appointment. Moreover, he rejected this offer and resigned. After his resignation, Spicer’s top deputy Sarah Huckabee Sanders was appointed as a Press Secretary.

Arun Jaitley launches Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana pension scheme 

  •  Finance Minister Arun Jaitley formally launched Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY), a pension scheme exclusively for senior citizens with 8% fixed rate of interest on their savings.
  •  Under this scheme, there will be an assured return of 8 per cent over a tenure of 10 years. It can be purchased offline as well as online through Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India which has been given the sole privilege to operate this scheme.

Karamjyoti Dalal wins bronze medal at World Para Athletics

  • India’s Karamjyoti Dalal has won bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships 2017 in the discus-throw. In the women’s F55 category of discus-throw, she managed a throw of 19.02 m.

Bicentenary Celebration of Paika Rebellion of Odisha inaugurated by Pranab Mukharjee

  • The President of India Pranab Mukharjee inaugurated the bicentenary celebration of the Paika Rebellion of Odisha organized by the Union Ministry of Culture on 20th July 2017.
  • President Mukherjee during the inauguration stated that the “Paika uprising was in the nature of a rebellion by Odisha people. It was aimed to uphold the Odishi people rights and sovereignty of them.

Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana launchced by  Union Government

  • Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley formally launched the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) on 21st July 2017. It is a pension scheme announced by the Union Government exclusively for the senior citizens aged 60 years and above available from 4th May 2017 to 3rd May 2018.

Sanjay Kothari appointed Secretary to new President

  • Sanjay Kothari, Chairman of Public Enterprises Selection Board, has been appointed as Secretary to President-elect Ram Nath Kovind.
  • Senior journalist Ashok Malik has been named as Press Secretary to Kovind, by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Senior Gujarat-cadre forest service officer Bharat Lal will be Joint Secretary to Kovind.

Neil Armstrong Moon Bag sold for USD 1.8 million in New York 

  • Neil Armstrong bag containing traces of moon dust was sold in an auction for USD 1.8 million on 20th July 2017 in New York.  An anonymous buyer bought this bag following a sluggish five-minute bidding war on the telephone.
  • The collection bag was used by astronaut Neil Armstrong to collect the first dust samples from the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission which was the first manned mission to the moon in 1969 and the auction marked the 48th anniversary of that mission.

Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park died 

  • Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, passed away on 20th July 2017 in California, U.S. 
  • He apparently hanged himself, which lead to his death.
