Renowned scientist Yash Pal passes away

  • Renowned Indian scientist and Padma Vibhushan awardee, Professor Yash Pal passed away at his residence in Noida on 24th July 2017. His last rites were held at 3 pm this afternoon.
  •  He is best known for his contributions to the study of cosmic rays, as an institution-builder. He was awarded with the Padma Bhushan in 1976 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2013. He became one of the leading science communicators of the country in his later years.

H S Prannoy wins US Open Grand Prix Gold badminton title

  • HS Prannoy notched up a thrilling three-game win over Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap in an all-Indian final to clinch the $120,000 US Open Grand Prix Gold. It was held at Anaheim, California USA.
  •  In the women’s singles of the tournament, Japanese Aya Ohori won the final. She has defeated Michelle Li of Canada.

Boxer Sachin Siwach wins Gold at Commonwealth Youth Games

  • World Youth Champion Sachin Siwach clinched a gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games, Bahamas after defeating Welsh boxer James Nathan Prober 4-1 in the final.
  •  Siwach, who won gold last year, was the only one of the 103 boxers to have clinched a gold so far in the tournament, taking place in Bahamas. The World Youth Champion was also the flag bearer of India for the tournament.

Mithali Raj named captain of ICC Women’s World Cup team

  • India skipper Mithali Raj was named as the Captain of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017 team by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on 24th July 2017.
  • Along with Mithali, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma were the other two Indians included in the ICC's team. In 2009, She was first included in the team before this and this time she has been named for the second time in the tournament team at during the world cup.

Compound that can combat effects of Zika virus discovered by - Spanish scientists

  • Researchers from a southeastern Spanish University have announced the discovery of a molecule on 22nd July 2017 that could be used to combat the effects of Zika virus.

World's first floating wind farm emerges off coast of Scotland

  • The world’s first floating windfarm has taken to the seas in a sign that a technology once confined to research and development drawing boards is finally ready to unlock expanses of ocean for generating renewable power in Scotland.

Mobile app Aarambh for road maintenance launched by - Union Government

  • Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Rural Development, Drinking Water & Sanitation, and Deborah Greenfield, Deputy Director General (Policy) of the International Labour Organization (ILO) introduced a mobile app Aarambh for road maintenance on 24th July 2017.
