World Hepatitis Day  observed on July 28 2017

  • World Hepatitis Day has observed on 28th July every year. Viral hepatitis is one of the leading causes of death globally, accounting for 1.34 million deaths per year that’s as many as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria. 
  • The 2017 theme of World Hepatitis Day is “Eliminate Hepatitis” to mobilize intensified action towards the health targets in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Bollywood actor Inder Kumar passes away

  • Bollywood actor Inder Kumar passed away recently. He was 44. I
  • nder Kumar suffered a heart attack at his residence in Andheri’s Four Bungalows. 
  • He has worked in more than 20 films.

Supreme Court stated that no immediate arrest under dowry harassment law

  • The Supreme Court ruled that the police cannot arrest the accused without conducting a preliminary inquiry under dowry harassment cases on 27th July 2017.
  • The court puts an end to immediate arrests in dowry harassment cases, under Section 498A of Indian Penal Code (IPC) with this verdict. 
  • The ruling was made by a bench of Justices A K Goel and UU Lalit.

NITI Aayog clears six proposals for high-tech public transport

  • The NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog has approved 6 transport proposals of the Transport ministry exploring options to improve public transport.

Ajay Singh wins bronze medal in Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 

  • India’s Ajay Singh has won the bronze medal in Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships at Kathmandu, taking India’s tally to three.
  •  Ajay got third place in 77 kgs men’s junior category lifting 143 kgs in snatch and 172 kgs in clean and jerk.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos becomes world’s richest person

  • Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon became the world’s richest man on 27th July 2017, putting back Microsoft founder Bill Gates from this position briefly. 
  • With a jump in the share price of the US tech giant, Bezos's net worth topped $90.5 billion in the morning of 27th July which was slightly ahead of Bill Gates’ estimated worth of $90 billion, according to Forbes and Bloomberg.

Iran successfully launches satellite-carrying rocket

  • Iran has successfully launched a satellite-carrying rocket Simorgh into space on 28th of July 2017.
  • The launch of a “Simorgh” rocket that is capable of carrying a satellite weighing 250 kilograms

  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance have signed an agreement for the distribution of insurance products through the branches.

Axis Bank approves re-appointment of Shikha Sharma as CEO

  • Axis Bank has re-appointed Shikha Sharma as MD & CEO of Axis Bank for the three-year term from June 2018. 
  • Her current term was to end in June 2018.

Memorandum signed to facilitate taxation cooperation by - BRICS nations

  • The 2017 BRICS Labour and Employment ministers meeting that concluded in Chongqing, China on 27th July 2017 concluded with the signing of the BRICS Taxation Cooperation Memorandum.
  • The document, signed by the Heads of Tax Authorities of the five BRICS Nations, aiming to establish a mechanism for taxation cooperation and is the bloc's first document elevating taxation cooperation to the institutional level.

Punjab launches flagship ‘care companion programme’ scheme

  • The Punjab health minister Brahm Mohindra has launched a flagship care companion health scheme on 28th of July 2017.
  • The state department of health and family welfare has signed an MoU with Noora Health India Trust, a healthcare non-profit organisation, for implementation of the ‘Care Companion Programme.'

  • Bolivia’s President Eva Morales declared that his nation has achieved “total independence” from the IMF and the World Bank in July 2017. 
  • This news was declared by President Morales on his official twitter account.

Glow-in-the-dark shark in Pacific Ocean discovered by Scientists

  • A group of scientists have discovered a new species of glow-in-the-dark shark in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
  •  The shark has an unusually large nose, with a weight of less than a kilo and measures less than a foot.
