Second round of National Deworming Day program covers 11 Cr children 

  • The second round of National Deworming Day (NDD) was held across the nation on 10th August 2017 to tackle worm infections targeting more than 11 Crore children.
  • The Health Ministry stated that among the total number of children, at least 7.8 Crore were from private schools while the rest, 3.5 Crore were out of school children. 

Peepli Live Actor Sitaram Panchal Passes Away

  •  Bollywood actor Sitaram Panchal passed away after almost a year-long battle with kidney and lung cancer. He was 54.

World’s Most Innovative Companies

  • 3 Indian companies including HUL, Asian Paints & Bharti Airtel have been ranked among Forbes’s list of  World’s Most Innovative Companies.

Web portal to enable online orders for textbooks launched by - NCERT

  • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) launched a web portal that will enable schools and individuals to place orders for their books online on 9th August 2017. 
  • Minister of State for Human Resource Development Upendra Kushwaha launched this portal in New Delhi.
  • The web service aims to ensure that no child is compelled to buy more expensive books for want of NCERT books.

Kynan Chenai Wins Bronze at 7th Asian Shotgun Championships

  • Indian shooter Kynan Chenai won a bronze in men’s trap event, his first international medal at the senior level, at the 7th Asian Championship Shotgun at Astana, Kazakhstan.

 SEBI Allows MCX to launch Gold Options

  •  The Multi Commodity Exchange Ltd (MCX), the country’s largest commodity exchange has received capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (Sebi) approval to launch options trading in gold.

Oxford Launches Tamil, Gujarati Online Dictionaries

  •  After the Hindi version, Oxford University Press (OUP) has launched online dictionaries in Tamil and Gujarati as part of its special focus on Indian languages.

Ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags

  • National Green Tribunal has imposed an interim ban on use of non-biodegradable plastic bags which are less than 50 microns in Delhi.

Gujarat First State to Implement Coal Utilisation Between Power Units

  • The Gujarat government has issued a tender for power developers to receive cheap coal marked for the state in return for selling coal-based power at less than Rs 2.82 a unit.

Odisha partners with Facebook

  • Odisha will partner with Facebook to train women entrepreneurs & Self Help Groups to promote entrepreneurship & digital literacy.

 Kerala, Haryana Top Sanitation Survey

  •  According to the survey, almost all rural households in Kerala and Haryana had access to a toilet report. 
  • The survey is released by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and was carried out by the Quality Council of India 

 India Ratifies 2nd Commitment Period of Kyoto Protocol

  • India ratified the Second Commitment Period of the Kyoto Protocol on 8th August 2017 on containing the emission of Green House Gases (GHGs).
