  • The World Bank Board approved the USD 175 million National Hydrology Project to strengthen capacity of institutions to assess water situation in their regions on 16th March 2017. 

G20 meet of finance ministers and central bank governors to begin - in Germany

  • The finance ministers and central bank chiefs from the Group of 20 economies (G20) will be meeting in Baden-Baden in Germany from 17-18 March 2017. 
  • The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening economic resilience in finance and digitalisation and to promote investment in Africa.

International Buddhist Conference in Bihar inaugurated by - Dalai Lama

  • The three-day International Buddhist conference began at Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Rajgir in Nalanda district of Bihar on 17th March 2017.
  • The event was jointly inaugurated by religious leader Dalai Lama and the Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mahesh Sharma.

Karan Avtar Singh appointed as - Chief Secretary of Punjab

  • Senior IAS officer Karan Avtar Singh was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Punjab on 16th March 2017. 
  • Avtar Singh is also given the charge of the Principal Secretary of Department of Personnel, General Administration and Vigilance and Investment Promotion.

Sachin Tendulkar appointed as UNICEF Ambassador for - ICC Women’s World Cup 2017

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as the UNICEF Cricket For Good ambassador for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017.
  • The ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 will be hosted from 23rd June 2017 to 23rd July 2017 in the United Kingdom.

Trivendra Singh Rawat has sworn-in as Uttarakhand Chief Minister  

  • Trivendra Singh Rawat sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand by the State Governor Krishna Kant Paul at the Parade Ground in Dehrandun on 18th March 2017.
  •  TS Rawat succeeded Harish Rawat of the Indian National Congress (INC) after the recent general elections to the State Legislative Assembly held in the February 2017 elections.

India and Brazil signed agreement to protect - Rights of detached workers

  • India and Brazil signed a social security agreement on 16th March 2017 in Brazil's capital Brasilia, exempting detached workers of the two countries from making social security contribution in either of the country, as long as they were making such contributions in their own respective nations.

Japan launched satellite to - Monitor North Korea

  • Japan launched a new satellite to track land and maritime movements in North Korea on 17th March 2017. 
  • The satellite will also be able to conduct surveys on the weapons programme of the secretive nuclear-armed state. 
  • The project was conducted by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the aerospace manufacturer.

World’s oldest red algae fossils found in - India

  • A group of scientists in India unearthed a pair of 1.6 billion-year-old fossils that appear to contain red algae.
  • It is estimated that it may be the oldest plant-like life discovered on Earth so far.
