Sanjaya Baru has been appointed as Secretary General of FICCI 
  • Sanjaya Baru was appointed on 1st August 2017 as the Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) with effect from 1st September 2017.
  •  He is succeeding A Didar Singh, who served as Secretary General for 5 years. 
RBI cuts policy rate by 25 basis points to 6%
  • Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), headed by Urjit Patel, decided to reduce the Policy Repo Rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points from 6.25 per cent to 6.0 per cent with immediate effect.
Government launches e-RaKAM portal
  • The Union Government has launched a portal, e-Rashtriya Kisan Agri Mandi(e-RaKAM) on 1st of August 2017.
  • e-RaKAM will provide a platform to sell agricultural produce and strengthen the agriculture-oriented Indian economy.
Agreement on transfer of sentenced persons signed between India - Somalia
  • India and Somalia signed a bilateral agreement to transfer the sentenced people on 1st August 2017.
  • The move is step forward in deepening humanitarian cooperation between both the nations.
SEBI approves appointment of Dhirendra Swarup as BSE chairman
  • SEBI has approved the appointment of Dhirendra Swarup as the chairman of the board of directors of the BSE with effect from July 31, 2017
  • He was the chairman of the Cash and Debt Management Committee of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 2000 to 2003.
Christopher Wray is confirmed as- FBI Director
  • The appointment of Christopher Wray was confirmed by the US Senate as the Director of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on 1st August 2017. 
  • He was elected to the post by winning 92-5 votes of the Senate. Before appointing him, Andrew McCabe was serving as an acting FBI director.
Dhanraj Pillay was honoured with the ‘Bharat Gaurav’ by East Bengal
  • Former India hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay was honoured with the ‘Bharat Gaurav’ by East Bengal Football Club on its foundation day on 1st August 2017.
  • Gurwinder Singh bagged the Footballer of the Year award while Boddupalli Amit was awarded as the Cricketer of the Year.
Renowned scientist Pushpa Mitra Bhargava passed away on 


  • Pushpa Mitra (PM) Bhargava, a veteran molecular biologist and a ardent critic of Genetically Modified crops, passed away on 1st August 2017 due to a prolonged illness. 
  • He was the Founder-Director of Hyderabad-based Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB).
India permitted to construct Kishanganga and Rattle Projects 
  • World Bank has said that India is allowed to construct hydroelectric power facilities on tributaries of the Jhelum and Chenab rivers with certain restrictions under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
